on the subject of albinism

I was reading The DaVinci Code today, and when I was reading the description of Silas (an albino monk), I was surprised to find he is described with red eyes. this was odd, because red eyes due to albinism only occur in small rodents and birds, because the blood vessels in the eye are close to the surface, and when the iris lacks pigmentation, you can see the oxygenated blood in the eye, turning it red. this doesn't happen in humans as the eye is too big. i have learned that there are rare cases where the eye is a vague pinkish brown color (in most cases, the iris is blue or yellow), but never red. what's more, the Silas character is a european, and pink eye in europeans is very rare.
